Welcome to the 44th AALS Clinical Conference on Lawyering with Creativity and For Equity.  My thanks go to your planning committee for their innovative and fresh approach to the program.  And to think that they did it during the pandemic!  AALS deeply appreciates the entire clinical community and all that you have done over the years to support the conference.  Attendance has grown from 55 in 1977 to 779 in 2019, and more than 1000 at last year’s virtual conference.  

We are especially pleased to be holding the Workshop for New Clinicians for a full day on May 9, rather than the half day of past years.

We also very much look forward to meeting in person on April 25-30, 2023, in San Francisco.

Welcome from Planning Committee Chair

Ukraine invasion. Ketanji Brown Jackson. One-way masking. DEI curriculum requirement. George Floyd-related convictions. Kim Potter sentencing. NextGen Bar. So many things happening; so much one wants to (must) respond to, teach about, and support students and clients around. What’s one person to do?

Enter . . .  Marie Kondo and the Clinical Legal Education Conference and New Clinicians’ Workshop.

The KonMari Method isn’t just about tidying. It’s about “tidying up in a way that will spark joy in your life and change it forever.” It’s about mindfulness, connection, focus, and passion. And this conference is about creativity and equity – two concepts that we hope spark joy in your teaching. 

So, as the conference approaches, use the KonMari Method to tidy your teaching life and spark joy with creativity and equity: 

  • Commit yourself to the whole conference, as though you were attending in person. 
  • Imagine your ideal of student learning and your role in it. 
  • Review your teaching life against this ideal and your role. 
  • Where you can, discard by category: service you barely care enough about to do well; learning materials, methods, and activities that aren’t achieving your objectives; that you (or your students) are tired of; or that seem dated or superfluous. 
  • Review the rest for joy and connection to student learning, your role, and your passion.

As you explore the sessions our amazing community is presenting, join the ones that spark deep thinking, curiosity, imagination, or playfulness. Have fun and take back the ideas that spark joy.
